Literary Analysis on Miss Brill
The story "Miss Brill" by Katherine Mansfield is a story about a lady of the same name. Because Miss Brill's beliefs in herself are shattered by a couple saying that she is old and unwanted, she realizes that her belief that her life has meaning has been an illusion. Miss Brill is an elderly, lonely lady who treats a fur that she owns as if it were human and her only companion. The fur is old, but she thinks that it is elegant. Mansfield states that Miss Brill takes the fur out of the box and shakes off the moth powder, and she rubs life back into its "dim little eyes". Miss Brill ignores that she is an elderly woman. When she starts to think of herself as old, she brushes that thought away, quickly. She tries to see happiness in every thought or situation. She has tingling in her hands and arms, but says to herself, " It must have been from walking - she supposed." She also thinks that, "When she breathed, it was something light and sad - no, not exactly - something gentle moved within her bosom." In this part, she immediately says, "no, not exactly" and she changes her words, not letting herself think these thoughts because then that would be evidence to herself that she was old. She constantly changes her words

The conversation is one that devastated her. The girl says to the young man, "No, not here. I can't." Then the boy says the first part of what would crush Miss Brill's spirit. He says, "But why? Because of that stupid old thing at the end there? Why does she come here at all - who wants her? Why doesn't she keep her silly old mug at home?" Of course, this conversation between them was hurtful to Miss Brill, since all the statements are directed at her. Then the girl talks about the one thing that really means something to her. She says, "It's her fu-fur which is so funny, it's exactly like a fried whiting." Then to end this cruel conversation, the boy adds, "Ah-be off with you!" Miss Brill usually buys a piece of honeycake on her way home as a special Sunday treat, but today, she passes up the bakery. She goes home, into her little dark room - like a cupboard, and sits for a long time. Then, she takes her fur off and without looking at it, quickly put it back into the box. She thinks that, "When she closes t
