Karl Marx was born in 1818 and lived in Prussia, current day Germany. Marx was born into a Jewish family, but converted to Lutheranism shortly after his birth (Kemerling 1). With his father being a lawyer, he had a lot of opportunities. Karl studied law in 1835 taking after his father at the University of Bonn. After a short time, he transferred to the University of Berlin to focus on philosophy (World Book 236). After trying to get several jobs in the philosophy field, he noticed he was unsuccessful due to the fact he criticized religion. This made Marx turn to journalism (Kuhn 1). With this new job of working for the Rheinische Zeitung, a local newspaper, he criticized the Prussian government (World Book 236).

Marxism influenced the development of the social thought, and many scholars have considered Marx a great economic theoretician and the founder of economic history and sociology. Once in Brussels, Marx and Engels wrote the Communist Manifesto. This book was the start of communism around the world. After the book was published in February 1848, the next month, the government expelled Marx from Belgium. After moving so many times, Marx fell into poverty (Kemerling 1). Marx's buddy Engels was nice enough to lend him the money and they founded the International Workingmen's Association. This was important to the bourgeoisie. It improved the life of workers and the middle class. Marx and Engels moved to Cologne. After publishing many articles in the paper, Marx was getting closer and closer to a world revolution. But in 1849 he received news that he was going to be expelled from the country and he was forced to leave (Spartacus 3). Marx moved to France where he believed a socialist revolution was likely to take place any time. Within a month from arriving, the French police ordered him to leave the capital. There was only one country left that would accept him. He set sail on September 15th for England. By this time, Jenny Marx, his wife, had given birth to their fourth child (Spartacus 4). England was going to expel Karl Marx and his family, but the Prime Minister refused and let them stay. At this point, Marx and his family were in extreme poverty. Within a few years their sixth child was born. Although they had six children, three of them died. Marx received a job for a little while, but that ended soon and the poverty was back and the Marxs' were extremely ill.
