Interactions between people have always been an interesting and insightful area of study. By studying the interactions between people, we can help to improve these interactions by creating solutions that improve communication, allow for equal participation and resolve conflicts. In her article "How Male and Female Students Use Language Differently," Tannen briefly explains how childhood habits create and reinforce different language patterns in males and females. Many differences between male and female language habits were mentioned but the one thing that was not stressed enough was the importance of hierarchy in determining the "participation gap" found in classrooms.
Tannen states that males and females "learn to use language differently in their sex-separated peer groups." This is simple and intuitive enough to understand. Different groups have different approaches to communication and hence the members of each group will have different language skills. Females tend to work in small groups of close friends. Males on the other hand, engage in large, competitive and
With this information, it is up to educators everywhere to come up with solution that address this participation gap between dominants and other students. As Tannen stated, we need to find "more-diverse methods to serve diverse students." This may not be as necessary in foreign classes compose of relatively monolithic people, but it is very important in the classes of America where diversity is great. Perhaps one of the main goals will be to reduce the rigidity of the hierarchy found within classes. One option may be to small groups as Tannen did with her class. Studying human interaction is truly interesting and insightful. Through research such as Tannen's we not only gain information on others but also about ourselves.
In dealing with classroom discussions, I've found that the more hierarchical the class is, the larger the "participation gap" will be. This comes from previously experience in foreign classrooms. In Taiwan, classes are mostly conducted with lectures. Discussions are seldom, but the hierarchical structure is still there and is determined by how well one does in class. Students with
