Anthem

Freedom persists even in the most perfect world filled with only equality; however, with having a hierarchy freedom is taken away along with rights leaving you with limited freedom. This leaves us with the question what is freedom? Even someone in prison for life still have some freedom. Don't they have freedom to live? Most of their civil rights are taken away, yes, but they are still freedom to be a human being and living. We will look at five different stories and try to answer these questions and I will prove to you many examples of people having only limited freedom.

Anthem is written as the diary of a man Equality 7-2521, a young man living in the future in which people have lost all knowledge of individualism, to the point of not even knowing words like "mine" or "I". Everyone lives and works together in collective groups, with all aspects of life dictated by councils. When he is assigned to a menial job cleaning the streets, he rebels against collectivism by conducting secret scientific research, which eventually leads him to re-create electric light. When he presents his discovery to the Council of Scholars, they condemn him for daring to act as an individual and threaten to destroy his creation. He flees into the Unch

In the book Democracy in America the author believes in order to most successfully combat dangerous democratic tendencies are: an independent and influential judiciary, a strong executive branch, local self-government, administrative de-centralization, religion, well-educated women, freedom of association, and freedom of the press.

At first it is not obvious why this feature of American government weakens the president's power. Indirectly, therefore, allowing the President to run for re-election increases the danger of the tyranny of the majority. Another problem with the constitutional organization of American democracy is the direct election of representatives and the short duration of their time in office. If the state of affairs continues, people may tire of the ineptitude of the system and abandon democracy all together.

arted Forest. He is joined by his love, a girl called Liberty 5-3000. They come across an ancient house, a relic of the Unmentionable Times before collectivism. There they rediscover the lost language of self. They rename themselves Prometheus and Gaea, and Prometheus vows to use his new knowledge to build a society based on individual freedom. On Ibid. Pg. 16-17 it says "It is not good to be different from our brothers; but it is evil to be superior to them." This is saying that we should all be equal and being superior our men is wrong because everyone should be equal. And yet they don't know what "I" is or being "Better at something" than one another. If you're not superior to someone and your all the say as "we" then your just taken away from your dignity but don't you still have yourself? And the freedom to breath, and just because your all the same aren't you all still free as one? Even though they all share the same rights and are equal their still free as one. Ibid. Pg. 12 says "Our name is equality 7-2521, as it is written on the iron bracelet which all men wear on their left wrists with their names upon it." You could brand me and put me filled in a room with a thousand other people like me but yet wouldn't I still be Summer Mills and you could call me another name but I would still have the freedom to think and know the difference. Just like in this book Prometheus and Gaea strive to change and find a individual freedom. Obviously they are free to think and look down deep to change and have feelings; they still have freedom of emotions. Even though these people are brand with equality and stripped from most of their rights and they're created as one they still have the limited freedom and rights as a human.

The overriding but more intangible danger facing democracies is simply their excessive love for equality. The doctrine of the sovereignty of the people and the power of public opinion are corollaries to the idea of equality. If there are no checks on the power of the majority to influence t
