Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder

Try to imagine living in a fast-moving kaleidoscope, where images, sounds, and thoughts are constantly changing. You feel really bored, yet helpless to keep your mind on what you are supposed to be doing. Unimportant sights and sounds are constantly grabbing your attention, and your mind drives you from one thought or activity to the next without stopping to think about it. For many people this is what it is like to have ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) or ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder). In my opinion ADD and ADHD are major disorders that need to be paid attention to not only in the classroom but in the workplace too.

What is it like for those with ADD or ADHD in school or in the workplace? Kids in grade school often have a very rough time. Impulsively blurting out questions and answers with out permission, or jumping out of their desk to go sharpen a pencil 5 times in one morning, are typical behaviors of kids with ADD or ADHD in grade school. A high school student might find classes that require a lot of attentiveness such as Algebra and or Biology very troubling. They might find school extremely boring and therefore put little effort into it, resulting in low grade

There are a whole bunch of symptoms that characterize these disorders. One very defining symptom is that of inattentiveness by those who have ADD or ADHD. People who are inattentive have a hard time keeping their mind focused on one thing and often get bored with a task after a short period of time. They might give effortless, attention to something that they really have interest in, and enjoy. Focusing on a certain task and trying to organize and complete it can be extremely difficult, if there is little or no personal interest in the task.

Hyperactivity is a characteristic of those with ADHD; hence the term Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Hyperactivity is mostly characterized by the person's endless supply of energy. Some people might venture to say that all kids are hyper, but kids with this disorder are like this all the time and can't help themselves. They might squirm in their seat, get up and roam around the room or just wiggle their feet incessantly. Adults with this problem feel constantly restless, or they may be fidgety. Adults with ADHD try to do several things at once, going from one activity to the next, usually without finishing the activity.

Another characteristic that is exhibited by both ADD and ADHD is that of Impulsively. People like this are unable to hold back their immediate reactions or think before they act. As a result they may blurt out inappropriate comments to their teacher, or boss. Kids might find it hard to wait for things that they want or to take their turn in games. They might also impulsively grab a toy from another kid or hit the other child if they become upset with them. I must say that my impulsiveness in grade school got me sent to the principals office more than any one in that school. I just wish that the teachers and my parents had of realized then, what the problem was so it could have been diagnosed.

Public schools and private schools alike need to be more aware of kids with ADD and ADHD. All teachers in grade school should be well aware of the characteristics of kids with these disorders. Teachers not only need to know the proper ways of dealing with these kids, but they should also be able to recognize the disorders. Sometimes a child with ADD or ADHD has not yet been diagnosed, and the child's teacher can play a large rol
