A detailed Summary of Werewolves

Werewolves have been talked about since the first werewolf tale in 1591. The website Werewolves: The Myths and the Truths tells of that first incident:

Towns were underdeveloped and people lived near woods. The fear of wolves was like a nightmare...but one day the inhabitants of the German town Cologne and Bedburg made a horrible discovery that altered the history of wolf killing. An age-old pamphlet describes those shivering moments vividly. A few people cornered a wolf and set their dogs upon it. They attacked it with sharp sticks and spears. Surprisingly the ferocious wolf did not run away; it stood up and turned into a middle-aged man. They could recognize the wolf shaped man; he was Peter Stubbe of the same village. This Peter Stubbe was the first werewolf mankind has ever faced with. (Alam 1)

Stubbe was later placed on a torture wheel where he confessed to killing sixteen people including two pregnant women and thirteen children (Alam 1). According to one web site, the causes of werewolves might be from one of three occurences: ergot poisoning, rabies, and nutritional imbalances (Alam 3). Ergot is a parasitic fungus that grows on rye. Ergot produces a chemical compound that is in likeness to some of the same effects caused by LSD (Alam 3). Being chased by wild beasts and even a desire to murder are some of its effects (Alam 3). Rabies causes extreme thirst, like wolves, and wild behavior (Alam 3). Some people who suffer from nutritional imbalances resort to cannibalism (Alam 3). All these symptoms put together would have certainly caused a scene in those times.
