A detailed Summary of Bartolo Colon Feature Article

In 1995 the Indians were powered by their hitting. This year they are powered by their pitching because of one man, Bartolo Colon.

Bartolo has proven he's a number one starter in the Indians rotation. Colon has averaged over fifteen wins per season since 1998 and has an ERA of 3.91 over that same time. "I've known Bartolo his entire pro career, he's always wanted to be the man, he's got a big arm and a good heart," said Indians pitching coach Mike Brown.

"Bartolo might be the major reason we have decided to put our ballclub in transition from a power-packed offensive team to a club based on outstanding pitching," says Indians General Manager Mark Shapiro.

"We've got a number of young arms to go along with him, but there's no doubt he's the most proven young pitcher we have," says Shapiro.

A way to measure how well a starter has done over his career is to measure his hits versus innings pitched. Going into this season he has allowed only 771 hits compared to 819 innings pitched. That ratio is considered good by just about everybody in baseball.

Colon has quietly became one of the best starters in the American League. Bartolo is, by nature, a quiet man. He is a native of the Dominican, where much of his you

This season is of to a rocky start for the normally smooth Colon. He is 1-1 with a 4.81 ERA. For the Indians to be in playoff contention, Bartolo will have to be more consistent and pitch well down the stretch like he has done in the past.

"Man, that Bartolo's an inning eater. Every fifth day, you send him out there and he gives you six, seven innings and everything he's got while he's doing it, and he pitches really great in in the games you need him to," said skipper Charlie Manuel.

"Don't get the wrong idea about Bartolo, He understands a lot more than people think, and he sees everything that goes on," says Issac

"I am confident, I am not concerned about what others say about me. If I'm pitching good , I know I am pitching good. If not, I know that too. I want to pitch as good as I can everytime," says Colon

" He seems to get better every time we see him," said former red sox designated hitter Dante Bichette "The first time I faced him when he was younger he just tried to throw the ball past everybody. Now he's added a good breaking ball and a solid change-up."

On the field Colon lets his arm do the speaking. "He seems to get stronger as the game goes on," said Indians Manager Charlie Manuel
