Third Republic of France
The Third Republic of France lasted from 1871 to 1905. During this time, there was much political turmoil. Starting with the Paris Commune in 1871 and ending with the Dreyfus affair in 1899, these political turmoils affected the political and economic aspects of French society. When national elections in 1871 sent a majority of conservatives to the National Assembly, many radicals responded with the Paris Commune in March of 1871. The radical leaders of the Commune wanted to govern France without conservative interference. The National Assembly did not want to hear from the radicals, and so therefore ordered the French army into Paris to severely crush the Commune. Twenty thousand people died during this purge. being used to defend one politicals parties beliefs, and to abolish the other. By 1875, monarchists in the National Assembly could not decide on who should be king. From 1877 to 1879, Leon Gambetta established absolute parliamentary supremacy. By 1879, the majority of members of both the upper and lower houses of the National Assembly were republican. Although these republicans were split among parliamentary groups and several parties, the Third Republic now had a firm foundation.
