A detailed Summary of Golden Compass
Conflicts in Different Settings 95192
In what ways does setting influence the plot? In Philip Pullman's novel, The Golden Compass, the character Lyra and her daemon Pantalaimon( an animal-like creature, which is necessary for human survival) comes into contact with different conflicts as she travels through Oxford, Bolvangar, and Svalbard. In each of these settings, she is faced with a new conflict; the bear Iofur, Gobblers, her father Lord Asriel or Mrs. Coulter (her estranged mother). Gobblers are people who capture children and test them for Dust.
The setting of Oxford is not exactly how we would picture Oxford, England since it contains Gobblers and daemons. While in Oxford, Lyra meets Mrs. Coulter, a bewitched scholar and an explorer. Lyra relishes the chance to explore the north so Mrs. Coulter employs her as an assistant on their expedition. Later on, Lyra finds

In Phillip Pullman's novel, Lyra faces many conflicts in the settings of Oxford, Bolvanger, and Svalbard. In Oxford, she faces the conflict whether to travel to the far North with Mrs. Coulter. In Bolvanger, she devises a plan on how to escape the prison, which she does successfully. In Svalbard, Lyra is faced with the conflict of how to retrieve her dad Lord Asriel after bears captured him. These conflicts display the theme that sometimes in life people encounter difficult situations in various settings which they must resolve.
At Svalbard, she retrieves Lord Asriel because Iorek, a bear on Lyra's side, defeats the bear Iofur, in mortal combat. "The winner would be king of the bears."(348) The conflict encountered by Lyra is whether she will see her father again. Iofur wins and they are able to rescue her father. During captivity, Lord Asriel performs experiments with Dust
