Is Dsart the Hero or Villain of Equus
In Equus the final scene shows the audience just how Alan feels about Equus and his creation in order to seek spiritual and sexual freedom. But was it Dysart that drove him to confessing about his passion. Dysart is a villain in the fact that he put Alan under a lot of pressure and finally led him to explode. But Dysart isn’t the only one who puts Alan in the spotlight. Other main characters who broke Alan down are Frank, Jill and even Equus itself. Dysart doesn’t have anything to do with Alan actually stabbing the horses but he does make Alan confess that he did it. So effectively he is a villain but he is also a hero as Alan is now free from Equus’ power and he has effectively got the issue ‘off his chest’. Dysart did push Alan very hard up to the confession, for instance on page 102 Dysart and Alan have a long shouting at each other where Dysart makes Alan confess that he had sex with Jill. He even says the words ‘did you?’ five times. So Dysart is both a hero and a villain in this situation but overall in the book I think that his profession as a psychiatrist makes him a villain. When
