Winston Smith is the protagonist, an intellectual man of thirty-nine years. He's a member of the Outer Party and has an insignificant and average life. He lives in the futuristic country of Oceania. Oceania is governed by Big Brother and the Party. The society in which he lives is based upon suspicion, fear, and hatred. The Thought police and the telescreen, a device in which acts as a spy, monitor every one of his moves. These telescreens are used to make sure no one commits a though crime A thought crime is a crime in which the Thought Police disagrees with. Even though it may be a minor one. Even the tiniest facial expression that would reveal opposed feelings towards the government could get him captured by the Thought police. Winston grows into a person that is vulnerable. Winston changes from being the one that hated the government to loving it. Before he had courage to commit the various thought crimes, in attempt to change the government, Even though he didn't get what he wanted, he still tried. But then the Party took that courage away from him. They introduced him to Room 101. This room is where his deepest fears lie; in this case rats. It caused him to let his fears, paralyze him and the Party, to control him. He leaves his true love for something he used to hate, and breaks the promise.
He is tired of the control the society has so he rebels against it. His first act of rebellion was to keep a diary and write in it.
