The good and bad aspects of society are just one of the things taught in chapters eighteen and nineteen of The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger. The main character, Holden Caulfield goes through many ups and downs and changes trough his journey in New York City. He figures out what life really is like on his own and has to cover many obstacles on his way. Holden is very worried about how other people act and how they are putting on an act but in these chapters he comes to realize who he really is better than he did before.
" I had quite a bit of time to kill till ten o'clock, so what I did, I went to a movie at Radio City. It was probably the worst thing I could've done, but it was near, and I couldn't think of anything else" (137), Holden says as he heads for the movies. Holden always talks about how crummy he thinks the movies are. Nothing in the movies are real. They are all just crummy and pointless
is something u often hear him saying. Although Holden has this strong opinion about the movies he always refers to them when talking about something he feels deeply about. When he was talking about his brother and being in the army he was referring to it with books and movies, which is odd because he says he hates them so much. Holden just wants something to dislike and doesn't want to be like other people when in reality he is.
During their drinks and conversation Luce became annoyed with Holden. Luce is a very intellectual boy and was very frustrated when Holden was acting immature. " Listen. Let's get on thing straight. I refuse to answer any typical Caulfield questions tonight. When in hell are you going to grow up?" (146) Luce exclaims to Holden while sitting there listening to his immature idea of a conversation. While Holden was deciding who to call for drink he asked Luce so he could have an adult and serious conversation
