Macbeth

A detailed Summary of Macbeth

"Macbeth is a villain in whom there is little to admire'. Do you think this is a satisfactory comment on Macbeth?

Macbeth is a character that we cannot class as simply a villain. His worthy characteristics also include being virtuous, brave and mighty as he fearlessly fights in battle. Although he commits foul acts this man is not purely evil. This can be proven as he cannot sleep and eat well and suffers from a guilty conscience right from the time he first murdered Duncan.

His main or only flaw which made his nature 'villianous' was due to a character flaw: overriding ambition, which was partly imposed by the three witches and his wife.

Even as the tale progresses towards his tragic end Macbeth stands tall and battles it out once again, courageously without fear.

We first hear of Macbeth, from the sergeant "for brave Macbeth" Revealing a honourable character, and the use of metaphors describing Macbeth with words as "eagles" and "lions" this is reinforced through the appraisal by King Duncan "O, valiant cousin! Worthy gentleman!"

Here in the beginning Shakespeare has revealed to us the true, typical medieval hero. Free of any evil and is loyal and noble as can be. This is important as it adds to the tragedy. Ironical

Macbeth unfortunately does not take this into account which leads him to his ultimate downfall. So excited by this news, he does not hesitate to deliver this message to Lady Macbeth an so sends a letter to her informing her about the strange prophecies. This reveals their close proximity. Act 1 Scene 4 initiates with her reading the letter.

Curses, not loud but deep, mouth-honour. Breath

Macbeth at first agrees then reassesses the outcomes and decides against his actions.

All hail, Macbeth! Thant shalt be king hereafter."

And chastise with the valour of my tongue"
