In support of Charley Reese's Claim Hate Crime Laws are not

Imagine yourself. Now imagine yourself without permission to say what you think. Next, imagine yourself without permission to act what you think. Finally, imagine yourself in a world similar to what became the exact opposite of a utopia in George Orwell's 1984,where you cannot live without permission. Charley Reese believes that once you take away freedom of speech, even from the most racist of individuals, you are destroying what the constitution granted to the settling Americans. Reese also believes that once you begin tampering with the Americans' rights we are adding totalitarian views to our government. "No matter how obnoxious or offensive we find certain speech, we must never consent to allowing the government to police it, for to police speech is to police thought, and that is the essence of the totalitarian philosophy."

Helen Dodge believes that the unity of the United States will diminish at the hands of bigotry and hate crimes; however with the amount of hate crimes today the United States still survives and is the strongest country on the planet earth. Hence, why would we need these laws? Charley Reese buttresses this point as he says that "hate crimes are a minor percentage of crime, and the government shoul

dn't be wasting its time trying to make the problem larger than it is." Our country was not primarily built on the motto "E pluribus Unum!" but rather was based on the Constitution, which in its first amendment grants those who call themselves true Americans, freedom of speech. Charley Reese declares that "to punish a crime of prejudice more than an otherwise crime of greed or general malice is a slap in the face to the victims of ordinary crimes." Our country is based on equality, and by making a more severe punishment for an exact crime breaks the paradigm of equal rights. Ultimately, it is unfair because it is impossible to instantly know the reasons behind guilt.

Charley Reese believes that there is a domino effect in terms of freedom, thus when we rob Americans of their first amendment a deduction of other freedom's rights follows. To deprive Americans their rights is un-American and Reese finds it very offensive. Just because an individual states something it doesn't necessarily mean that they will actually follow through, therefore we cannot sensor people's voices. Reese reminds the reader of an old Cold War joke, where "an American in Moscow tells a Russian, 'Look, I can stand out in front
