Subliminal Messages, Do They Work?

Have you ever asked yourself if subliminal audiocassette tapes really work? These audiocassette tapes produce everything from quick weight loss to peace of mind. Well, Professor Philip M. Merikle of the University of Waterloo Ontario did a study on this exact topic. Professor Merikle noticed an increase of sales in commercially made audiocassettes, which haul's in now about $50 million annually. With this observation Professor Merikle stated that these tapes were produced with a subliminal message. Along with this statement he continued saying that commercially produced subliminal tapes can be detected in some way. First, he is going to check each cassette to see if it contains a "placebo" by using the spectrographic voice-analysis technique. Second, he is going to expose the tapes to human participants and ask if they heard a noise plus a message or if they just heard a noise alone. After this experiment Professor Merikle concluded that no information is perceived from these cassettes. Professor Merikle's studies have been the most quoted on the topic of subliminal messages on audiocassettes after doing this experiment.

Regular televisions commercials don't seem to contain any subliminal messages. But do they? Does the person advertising the product have anything to do with its message? Well, Michael Jordan is selling you Gatorade, Jerry Seinfeld is backing up American Express, and Paul Reiser wants you to use AT&T. Why do these famous stars appear on commercials and ads? The purpose is to subliminally give the product traits that it never even deserves, like wealth, fame, and success. When you see Michael Jordan drink that Gatorade and then go for a 360 slam dunk, they want you to think that,"Hey, maybe if I drink Gatorade, I can become a great a basketball player as Michael Jordan!!!" Now when you see something like Jerry Seinfeld with American Express, they want you to think, "If somebody so prestigious and successful as Jerry Seinfeld loves American Express, than it MUST be a great card to have!" Besides the less obvious, there is simply the fact that these companies want a famous celebrity to present a product, rather than some common person.

e subliminal audiocassettes are not effective for several reasons. The first reason is that Professor Merikle was generalizing from three studies of a few tapes, which in effect is grave danger from all of the other available subliminal audiocassettes available. Second, the research as it applies to contrasted masked messages, which is costly, technologically complex and is still in its early stages. Plus there was no evidence that these same tapes could be changed in the future to be more effective.

Suggest.com was wondering how powerful is the power of suggestion. They bring up some interesting information on how they came about. They begin with talking about a mister James Vicary. His name may not seem familiar to most, but what he did was never forgotten. In September of 1957 Mr. Vicary claimed to have increased the concession sales of a movie theater by repeatedly displaying the subliminal message "Drink Coke" and "Eat Popcorn" on the screen. Unfortunately no evidence was provided to support the claim, but this event started many investigations on the effects of subliminal messages. With this Suggest.com takes its stab at it. Suggest.com came up with many ways on how to make a subliminal message more effective. One way to be more effective is to realize that the minimum on time for your message is controlled primarily by the design of the monitor rather than the design of the suggestion. To improve their effectiveness they use a tachisto-scope, which is a box capable of displaying images at high speeds. Unfortunately, the computer screen isn't as effective as this device; they still can be used to show messages. It takes approximately 4/1000 of a second to display three rows on the computer screen. If the three rows are scanned immediately after they are put in the screen buffer and are then replaced with the original data, an 8/1000 of a second will have elapsed. As said before to be most effective for subliminal messages it would have to be displayed at 1/1000 of a second, so unlike the tachisto-scope, the messages will display an obvious flash when the subliminal message is being shown.

Another company that seems to be running on subliminal advertising is Newport cigarettes. Newport's long-running and immensely successful "Alive With Pleasure" campaign always has some type of hidden message in them. In these photos there is a strong undercurrent of sexual hostility, usually directed at women. Many depict women who seem to be off-balance and menaced, or at least a target of male energy. Some examples of this are that some of the women are about to be clanged by a pair of cymbals, carried off on a pole, pulled along in a horse collar, or slam-dunked in the face by a basketball-wielding male. About 80% of these ads are coded scenes of sexual aggression, though everyone is shown wildly laughing to indicate the opposite.
