Do Not Resuscitate orders are unethical and inhumane for 1. Life must be preserved at all cost. 2. Human beings cannot decide who lives and who dies. 3. Who decides what quality of life is? Disability could also be defined as different ability. 4. Birth and Death in the hands of God. 5. Killing infants and children with severe disabilities is not equal to saving health care dollars. 6. Often trauma affects caregivers after the assisted death of the child. Let us cite some research articles and views of health care professionals on this issue. 1. In an article "Resuscitation should not part of every death", Hugh Tunstall-Pedoe, Professor of cardiovascular epidemiology, at University of Dundee at Ninewells Hospital, United Kingdom writes that" According to the Oxford Dictionary, resuscitation means restoring life from apparent death, with overtones of the resurrection of Christ. Medical practice has introduced semantic confusion by corrupting the term to mean the often vain attempt to restore life. And he continues to write that "even in chronic progressive disease the transition to death is momentary and therefore sudden."
One client has two sons. The elder son is 22 months old and the younger son is 6 months old. The elder son is not able to sit as there is a severe defect in the spine. He gets 2-3 seizures every day. Many home care services are heavily involved. Mother is putting all her energy to save him. Mother thinks that when he grows up and goes to school, the younger son will take care of him. She expects 6 months old to do everything on his own and also take care of the elder brother. The family has adjusted to the child's disability. The key word being 'adjusted'. Our contention is that 'adjustment' is a mental conditioning. The society must create conditions for the adjustment to the preservation of life.
