Lee establishes Scout as the first person narrator and in this way Scout is the subject of portrayal. In the first three chapters Lee introduces the reader to other characters such as Atticus Scouts father, Jem her brother, Miss Caroline Fisher her teacher and Calpurnia the family cook. Atticus is a very affectionate father who tries to the best for Scout, as she has no mother to influence her. Lee creates Atticus into a wise character. He has a lot of respect for the black and others that the town dislike. Atticus has time for his family although he is conscientious in his job. He has taught Scout many a skill, for example how to read. Although Scout does not acknowledge this, "He hasn't taught me anything, Miss Caroline"(Pg 19 line 6). Calpurnia is the black cook for the Finch household. She is well respected by Atticus and the children. She has authority over the children. This is shown when Walter comes home for lunch and pours what Scout thinks is an excessive amount of syrup, she remarks and Calpurnia calls her to the kitchen, "don't matter who they are, anybody set foot in this house's yo' compa'ny"(pg 27 line 22). She can smack the children and tell them off, she always has Atticus' backing on her actions. Calpurnia is a disciplinarian, Scout and Jem both obey the rules she sets. Sympathy is created for Scout when she comes back from school and she has had a really hard day. Calpurnia notices this and spoils her, " Capurnia bent down and kissed me"(Pg 32 line 18). As everything is seen through Scouts eyes Scouts opinion of Calpurnia is going to be very different to Atticus' opinion of her.

Lee creates Jem as the older brother so there is someone to protect Scout. Jem and Scout get along reasonably well. Jem does like to be seen as a coward. This is shown when Dill and Scout dare him to make Boo Radley come out of his house, at first he says no, although in the end he does the dare so Dill does not see him as a coward, "Jem wanted Dill to know once and for all that he wasn't afraid of anything"(Pg 15 line 12).
