Online Education
The sections I read in the text were the Introduction and Retrospective, as assigned, and chapter 8: supporting learners at a distance from inquiry through completion, by Daniel Granger and Meg Benke. I chose this last section because as I stated in the last posting on concerns I am always interested in motivation and support for students through the challenges of education. As to the first section - The Introduction by Michael Moore, I found two strong consistencies between the class and the text, one general note, and no inconsistencies. The first consistent strain I saw was the comments about the qualities of Online learners. The author maintains that online students have three general qualities: motivated, dedicated, and are out of the element/comfort zone. I felt that all three of these were in general true for our class. We seem to be a motivated group as evidenced by our taking this class at this time of the year, in conjunction with finals, summer vacation, and a host of other life events. Dedication comes in many forms and our churning through the jumping schedule of this class certainly shows our dedication to mastering this in depth and complex educational system. Finally, I know that I for one am certainly
As to specific online practices for motivation, the text suggested two things that were evident in our class. First, building on relevant experiences. We were charged with incorporating what we already knew and did as educators throughout this class so we certainly have consistency between the book and class. Second, the text suggested that enhancing the community of learners is another good method for motivating students and helping them get through the online experience. Again MO-P certainly encouraged us towards building a community of learners. In this case perhaps a longer class would further encourage students along these lines. Just a Thought. out of my element when it comes to working on a computer and it has been a challenge to me to work through this class. The second consistency I saw referred to the method of delivery that works best in the online environment. The introduction clearly stated that: Content Relevancy, Clear Direction, Control of Pace, Dealing with Individual Concerns/Problems, Practice and Feedback on skill development, and having the materials employed be on task for the learning, were the critical steps to success in online education. We certainly received these things in abundance from MO-P and thus received Consistency
