Candide (Its supposed to be sarcastic)
Ok. So, Voltaire's philosophical outlook. He was all about the intellectual-laziness. One can twist his (or her) mind into all kinds of crazy loops, and come up with nothing worth a farthing. Unless one has some factual information, based on worldly experience, thoughts are irrelevant. In Candide, Voltaire is criticizing Liebniz's theories of optimism, and of the fate of the world. Voltaire was a thinker of the Enlightenment, and his work shows that men were placed on the earth and given the ability to reason, and the world they live in is the result. Everything does not happen for a reason, and Voltaire proves this through Pangloss' faulty logic (STD's bring about chocolate, the sea was created so that the Anabaptist could be drowned, etc.). Candide is Voltaire's means of attacking everything from religion to racism, but the general idea is that a person needs to learn for themselves what is right for them, and how to do what makes them happy, rather than just going with the flow, letting the world fall to pieces, and relying on fate. It is important to realize how powerless men are, in both the ability to understand the world, and
the vain belief that it can be conquered. "Maybe in order to understand mankind, we have to look at the word itself: "Mankind". Basically, it's made up of two separate words - "mank" and "ind". What do these words mean? It's a mystery, and that's why so is mankind." The 'Big LHS' is definitely a world in it's own cup. The world itself might not be the best, but the cup surely is. For all the half-buttock-ed ways things are done around here, it's still a relatively enjoyable and happy place to be. The only reason that some people think otherwise is because they haven't put that much in, in order to get that much out. It's like trying to make a sweater... you aren't going to get anywhere if you don't put some yarn in the sewing machine. What I'm getting at is that the place in which we are contained, and the constants (the teachers, administration, etc.) are generally out to make the experience of the students worth their time (even if it gets a little ridiculous with announcements in the middle of class just the very tip of the ice-berg). However, some students add the wars and the thieving monks, while others add an El Dorado
