Homeschooling is currently a hot social issue because of the major increase of homeschooled American children in the last decade. There are two major opinions on this issue: parents who believe they have a right to choose how their children are educated and those who believe that children need to be socially stimulated and that educators can instill patriotic values that cannot be taught in the home arena. Many parents insist that children can learn more easily at home, in an environment where disruptions are few and parents can teach children one-on-one. Parents allow children to work at their own pace, sometimes even permitting them to choose their own curriculum. Parents also believe that there is something seriously wrong with the public school system, with felons in their children's classes and fights during lunch almost every day. In the parents' opinion, homeschooling is an excellent alternative to the public school - just as wonderful as any private school. However, society has formed an almost loathing for homeschooling partly because homeschooling soaks up all of the money schools may earn for each pupil's head. The 41,128 homeschooled children in Florida have taken $130,000,000 from the schools' budgets. This outrages society because the public education system is considered to be an important and vital foundation to this country. Former President Clinton announced his opinion of homeschooling to the entire world: To add to this, homeschooling children tend to have better manners and speak more easily to others than public-schooled children (Cloud and Morse ). Also, psychologist Dr. Johnson from the National Home Education Research Institute can put some of the qualms to rest. His studies have shown that home educating parents have adequately taught their children every necessary part of socialization for children: identity, destiny, morals, self-government, interactions with others, sexuality, and social skills. All of these were settled. Many homeschooling parents actually object to the teaching of certain material popularly believed to be "socialization" at such a young age. They are prepared to tell their children of certain issues when the children are ready to accept it maturely. Some at the extreme level feel that "the objective [of teaching sexual education and other objectionable courses to students] is to create in them the tolerance for everything that is against the law of God" (Dykema). Socialization is no longer even questioned. It takes a galactic commitment of time and money and patience for a parent to spend all day, every day, relearning algebra (or getting it for the first time) and then teaching it (Cloud and Morse 49) Public schools are turning out a poor product; illiterate and unprepared graduates...Public schools have become crime scenes where drugs are sold, teachers are robbed, and homemade bombs are found in lockers (Lyman). 12.1% of homeschooling parents homeschool because they object to the material the schools are teaching. This may seem like a small percentage, but the homeschooling movement is growing at a rate of 11% per year. Altogether, homeschooling has increased by 30% since 1991. "There has been a tremendous growth because many parents want to exercise more control over their kids' education and socialization," says Bill Lloyds, researcher at the National Home Education Research Institute (Ralmost). Currently, approximately 1.5 million children in the United States homeschool. This is not a particularly large amount compared to the amount of students in the Unites States, but parents are becoming for homeschooling because of the many flaws in the public school system. Parents are the first and foremost educators of their children, and they also possess a fundamental competence in this area; they are educators because they are parents (TORCH).
