Breaking Moral Rules
Moral rules can and are broken where there is a professional exemption granted by society to do so. There are numerous examples where an individual's profession either implies or dictates how they should act. This can cause the individual to perform tasks or act in a way that goes against moral rules. These types of moral dilemmas can occur in a number of professions but are heightened in the fields of law and medicine. These professions have human interaction at every level and as such are more inclined to be effected by moral or ethical decisions. Doctors, police officers and lawyers are constantly placed in situations that test their moral beliefs against their responsibilities to society. Abortions are performed in public and private hospitals and in private clinics across Australia. Through their actions professionals and business people sometimes break moral rules for their own financial gain. The utilitarian approach shows that there is justification for breaking this rule in that the person stealing the food believes that if they steal the food, then they and/or their family will not be hungry, and this is good. To a utilitarian, this is a reasonable justification, because the person is attempting to increase the happiness for as many people as he can. * Doctors should do everything in their power to benefit the patients health According to government statistics approximately 160,000 safe terminations were performed for the financial year 2001-2002. These statistics come from Medicare financial records as all these abortions were partially funded by Medicare.
