The Scarlet Letter

The Scarlet letter starts out with an unfortunate marriage between Hester and Roger Prynne, within this marriage we see it lead to adultery and revenge, which is all a sin in the puritan world of which is the setting of the book. We see that with Hester's sin of committing adultery lead other people to get caught in the midst of it all, and to sin themselves.

Hester Prynne the stories main character is committed of adultery, which was a sin back then, and was a sin worthy of death at that. The only reason that Hester's life was spared was because she wouldn't say who the father of her child was, and the baby couldn't live without and mother and a father. But in order to practice their authority the magistracy decided to punish her by making her wear the scarlet A on her bosom, and to stand on the scaffold for three hours every day. So that people could see her, and realize what could happen to them if not worse if they were to do this. "But in their great mercies and


In conclusion, there are many options as to who is the worst sinner in the book. Some might say that Hester is the worst sinner because, she ruined her life Roger's and Dimsdale's, and even her own daughters by turning her into a little witch. "The little baggage has witch craft in her." Others say that Roger Chillingworth is the worst because he tried to destroy someone else's life. "We are not Hester the worst sinners in the world. There is one worse then even the polluted minister that old mans revenge has been blacker then my sins. He has violated in cold blood, the sanctity of a human heart, thou and I Hester never did so." (Ch 17) And other say that Pearl is the worst sinner, due to her anger and hatred towards the puritan society. Despite all of these conclusions, I conclude with a thought that makes more sense to me, that all sins are equal in Gods eyes.

Finally the last sinner is Roger Chillingworth, also known as Roger Prynne. Even though he did not commit
