A detailed Summary of The Birds and the Bees Do It Why Not Teach It

The Bird and The Bees do it, Why not Teach It?

Everyday a horrifying amount of teenagers become pregnant in just the state of Arizona. Arizona is only one of the many states that take funding from the government to use towards abstinence only sexual education. Less than five years ago, every state had applied and received money for abstinence based programs but in the end, three sates did not use the money. (Heins 20) Those states realized the lack of HIV education and noticed that students who were gay, lesbian, or already sexually active would not receive any help. With a change towards the better and towards a more comprehensive sex ed curriculum, teens will have a place and a person to ask their many questions to, they will be educated on what types of contraceptives they can use, and they will know what the consequences of not using those contraceptives are.

A law was made in 1996 to try and eliminate welfare and increase conservative thinking among Americans in poverty. (Heins 20) That law uses eight ideas for abstinence based education, one of which was "children of single moms or unmarried couples are implicitly told that their parents have suffered "harmful psychological and physical effects" fro

Many advocates against a comprehensive curriculum will say that if you teach teens about sex, they will go out and do it. Said best by Russell Gouch, a writer for World and I, "[m]any teens will engage in sex no matter how much we encourage them to abstain, so we are better off providing them with the know-how to have sex safely." According to the article Parents Want Schools to Teach More Sex Education, from the Curriculum Administrator, "[r]oughly half of the boys and girls in the country have had sexual intercourse by high school." (20) If these teens are in a school that is teaching abstinence only based class in their junior year of high school, a time after they have started having sex, they will have no help in learning about how to be safe. A comprehensive class would teach teens about the different types of birth control, condoms, female condoms, and other safe sex practices. If it does turn out that a teen has sex and is not safe about it, she or he may receive an STD, become pregnant, or worse contract HIV. With classes like I would like to see, these students who are already in trouble will have the knowledge to notice an STD soon enough to get help, and will know their options for an unwanted pregnancy.

The problem of teen pregnancy and the rising number of STD and HIV cases is a very big concern to
