The date was March 4, 1933, when my family and I gathered around the radio anxious to hear the inauguration of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, soon to be the President of the United States. "The only thing to fear is fear itself", we heard his voice ring over the old staticky tubes of our 1929 RCA. The man spoke strongly and compassionately restoring courage in the American people, even those who were hit the hardest by the crash. His words were comforting to my family and even brought tears to my mother's eyes knowing that finally this madness was going to be dealt with. My father, who was cradling my little sister, on the other hand, was much more skeptical, even though I know he checked off Roosevelt's name on the ballot. He was not so sure of the ability of the new guy in town, who claimed he could put an end to the hardships of the Depression. My father seemed to be somewhat impressed with how Roosevelt was handling these matters in such a short time. So you can bet, the next day my father drove to New York to reinvest his money now that his confidence was restored in the new President of the United States. As the President said, "Together we cannot fail." I remember that day, March 12, 1933, because my parents had bumped my bedtime back just so I could hear the President's speech at ten o'clock p.m. The President thought it wise to let the citizens of the United States in on what his plans were to bring things back to order. He discussed how the banking system worked in layman's terms, so that the average citizen would be aware of exactly what the problem was. He let America know why all the banks had temporarily shut their doors.
