Pip has a sense of longing for parenting, this is shown by him talking about his parents. He has no sense of identity, this is shown in the first paragraph where Pip introduces himself and says that he could not pronounce his name(Philip Pirrip) more than Pip. The setting shows a inhospitable environment.
