Comparisons between medeval and modern life
I would like to focus my response paper on the similarities, as well as some differences between the world of Cecilia, and the world today. I found that there are many similar aspects with slight twists. Farming was then, and is now one of the major aspects of daily life for many people. Like Brigstock, Montana, is an area dominated by an agricultural economy. The ownership of land is still today thought of as a symbol of wealth, or power. However just as in Brigstock, most people have no land. One similarity however for those who do own land, it is usually passed down to them by their fathers, and so on. The only reason there aren't more farmers is because of the simple fact of changing times, and the necessity for other jobs. The idea of shared public lands for grazing, foraging, and gathering firewood, still exists today. Many things are similar between the relationships between men, and women, then and now. We discussed that in Cecilia's time widowed men were usually remarried quickly, this is still true today. Also, like then most widowed women today don't remarry. Differing aspects between then, and now, include the ability to divorce legally. In Cecilia's time, legal divorce was possible, however unlikely. Most people agreed to go their separate ways, remaining technically married. Today we still see this, however either man, or wife, can legally divorce the other. The idea that then women were somewhat of a second class, still exists in many places of the modern world. In America, women share equal legal rights with men. Religiously, many of the things Cecelia did are very similar to average people today. Many people then, and now still live their lives in accordance with religion. Churches were then, and are today still centers of public acti
