Depression
Depression knows no age or gender boundaries and has been around as long as the human race. To this day, depression may still be the least accurately diagnosed disease existing. It is thought that fifty percent of the population goes untreated because they either do not realize they are depressed or a doctor fails to diagnose this depression. The form of this disease varies from one individual to the next. While some people lack the energy to get out of bed, others are full of nervous energy and suffer from sleepless nights. There many causes that brings about several viable avenues of treatment. Antidepressants such as Prozac, Zoloft, and Luvox are now among the most prescribed drugs in America. All antidepressants work by slowing the removal of certain chemicals from the brain. However, tremendous controversy exists between the safeties versus the benefits of these drugs. These include the different side effects, the high possibility of overdosing, and omitting self-exploration. There is growing evidence that the efficacy of antidepressants may be largely due to placebo effects. The knowledge about the neurochemistry of many psychiatric drugs is much too scant; therefore evaluating these drugs based on their effect on any o
Controversial issues include whether the side effects and the possible dangers of overdosing are worth the benefits. Although the newest antidepressants have fewer effects, they are extremely important and should be taken into consideration. No doubt the controversy around antidepressants will continue, and it seems to be one of those questions in which there is no one easy answer. However, prescription antidepressants are not the only options for dealing with depression. Some people have found relief simply by addressing underlying nutrient deficiencies. Studies have found that many people respond just as well to these natural therapies as they do to prescription antidepressants, without the toxic side effects. Since any depressed individual is potentially at risk for suicide, the possibility of fatal overdose is a major disadvantage. In Drug Safety, author Henry JA writes, "of all the drugs that are taken in lethal overdose, prescribed antidepressants are among the most common" (Wolff, pp.33). This abuse of dependency is also known as addiction. While some drugs are more prone to be addicting, some people are also more likely to addictive behavior, regardless of the nature of the substance. Depressed people are probable to overdose on almost anything, as well as being inconsistent
