Common Sense/Thomas Paine
In the book Common Sense, by Thomas Paine, the ideas of the Enlightenment and that how our country needs to become free from England's tyrannical rule are the main issues in Paine's writings. In Thomas Paine's little pamphlet, his words set fire to the imagination and sparked movement in the eyes of the colonists in the establishment of the independence of the United States. In 1776, the colonies set forth by England were in a moral battle between themselves. Should they stay loyal to England or was it time to make a move for independence? By writing his theories of Enlightenment and of independence virtues Paine, gave flight to an American nation. Common Sense was written in 1776 in order to gain support for his cause, which was the cause of Enlightenment. The Enlightenment was not just a movement in the 1700's; it was a way of thinking. Thomas Paine believed that by writing this pamphlet he could enlighten the people around him. The ideas of natural law, of inherent freedoms, and of self-determination, were the ideals that Paine spoke of in the book Common Sense. It was the political and spiritual philosophy of Thomas Paine that sparked the Revolution of the United States, against that of England. Paine seemed to display a manner about his writings that was straightforward. He spoke like he had a purpose and I believe his purpose was to stir the emotions of the colonists into revolt. Paine wrote, "A government of our own is our natural right: And when a man seriously reflects on the precariousness of human affairs, he will become convinced, that it is in finitely wiser and safer, to form a constitution" (Paine). In saying this Paine was convinced that to make a government of our own was inevitable, that it was the right thing to do. We need to make a government of our own, giving freedom and liberty to the people. To do this we needed to write a constitution, and have a set government "of the people and by the people".
