Jonah

A detailed Summary of Jonah

This research paper is about the minor prophet named Jonah. The name Jonah in Hebrew means, "Dove".

Jonah, son of Amittai, was a dedicated Hebrew who lived in Northern Israel in the eighth century B.C.E. He was active as a prophet during the reign of Jeroboam II. (Buck p.110)

During this time period, the North (Israel) and the South (Judah) were still in disputes. On top of this, a pest had ravaged the lands causing many deaths. (Driscoll p.110) Jonah had preached in the North but one day the Lord had called upon him saying "Set out to the great city of Nineveh, and preach against it; their wickedness has come before me." (Jonah 1:2) Jonah had fled from the Lord because he did not want to go to Nineveh for they were wicked and a traditional enemy

of Israel. While he was on a ship, the Lord sent a violent storm so Jonah asked the men on board to toss him off because he was the reason that the storm had been sent. But then a "Great Fish", presumably a whale, swallowed him. He was spit out after praying for three days in the belly of the fish and then after speaking to the Lord went to Nineveh and to his surprise the people had listened to the words he spoke upon them and they had repented immediately to God. (Driscoll p.111-112)

The form of prophecy used by Jonah was by preaching. In fact, he did not even write The Book of Jonah. During the time period of Jonah, preaching was the best way to get your messages across.
