Gun Control and its Controversies
A detailed Summary of Gun Control and its Controversies
Gun Control and it's Controversies
The arguments on gun control have been a very controversial and ongoing debate between
many well respected individuals. Doctors, Lawyers, Media, Criminologists, and many others have all been debating on whether or not the government should pass stricter laws on gun control. Government, individuals, among others have supported independent studies to prove their point on the issues of gun control. Numerous laws have been passed in regard to these studies on gun control over the years.
In the essay, "Just Take Away Their Guns", James Q .Wilson stated that guns should be taken away from the criminals and not the law abiding citizens. In Wilson's essay, he includes a household survey by Gary Kleck, which estimates that there are more people who defend themselves with a gun than people arrested to violent crimes and burglaries. Wilson then supports the Second Amendment which allows people the right to bear arms. Therefore, he thinks taking guns away from individuals would not be the most effective way to reduce illegal guns from being used. He states all individuals with handguns should have a permit and the law officers should take away all others. Wilson then states

The belief that the guns should be taken out of the criminals hands by trusting the authorities to fulfill their duties, whether it be from the pat-down or through mechanical methods such as a gun detector.
The government had to get support for Gun Control from the general public. In order to achieve this they recruited doctors, media, and spokespersons to convince the public. The studies that were done by the recruited persons were not completely unbiased. The studies done by the doctors were only achieved by what the doctors saw in the hospital setting. This was one sided because they never saw the other side where peoples lives were saved through the use of guns. Another study compared the homicide rates in two different cities but did not take into consideration the differences in the actual cities. Often myths come out of these studies that are treated as facts. One of the common knowledge facts is that gun ownership in your home will increase your risk of homicide by a factor of 43. There are not any proven facts to support this statement. One study combined cross-sectional and time series data. This study was the most accurate of the studies. During the time of this study the shall issue laws were passed, showing the crimes decreased where individuals could carry concealed weapons. Crimes against women decreased where a woman had a gun. The study also showed that allowing people to have a concealed gun creates a greater effect in high population counties and in high crime counties. Also, young, black male increases the rate of crimes. The belief in legal concealed guns helps to save lives, prevents violent assaults and rape.
Gun control has many pro's and con's. Taking guns away from the law abiding citizens would not stop the criminals from having or even us
