Note on The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas

One man’s joy is another man’s sorrow. From this essay, we can clearly establish a parallel with our Western privileged life (Omelas) at the expense the developing countries (The child). But if we consider Omelas and the child as absolute opposite in terms of mentality, religion and ultimately culture, I would stay rather than leave Omelas. Freedom of society, reason, science, self-reliance and productivity are the greatest Western inheritance. Therefore, if the Western culture is objectively superior to other cultures, Omela’s well-being is also more important than the child’s fate.

There are two fundamental respects on which Western civilization rests: Monotheism and reason.

The Jews were the first to believe this conception; there is only one God, Omnipotent Creator of the universe. In this way, mankind was given stewardship over His handiwork and from this awareness came the first basic principle: Monotheism. True Religion deals principally with the why of our existence.
