Emma - The Proposal between Mr Elton and Miss Smith

Mr Elton 's proposal to Emma takes place during the carriage ride home after visits to Randall. Mr Elton takes this chance to declare his love for Emma. The carriage is small and private so there is no way for both of them to escape. Both of them have to stay together for the time that the journey takes. This seems to go on forever. Probably Mr Elton chose this moment because he was sure that Emma would accept. She is so sure that Mr Elton is interested in Harriet, at the beginning she thinks that he must be drunk when he said the proposal to her. ' I am very much astonished, Mr. Elton. This to me! You forget yourself......any message to Miss Smith I shall be happy to deliver....if you please.'

Emma is shocked that Mr Elton should think she is in love with him. 'she was too completely overpowered to be immediately able to reply.' She is also horrified that he could be so, however, Mr Elton tried to explain why he thought that Emma encourage him to feel affection for her. '...visit to Hertfield have been for yourself only; and the encouragement I received' The conversation between Mr Elton and Emma is very ironic. Emma, who always thinks she is a good judge to people 's chara


Both Mr Elton and Emma are very angry, there is no much time for embracement. When they both arrived home, because of Emma refuses Mr Elton 's proposal, it seems that Mr Elton is more anger than Emma by the way he talks to her, ' he was too angry to say another word ...her manner too decided to invite supplication....Emma then felt it indispensable to wish him goodnight. The compliment was just returned, coldly and proudly; and ,under indescribable irritation of spirits, she was then veyed to Hartfield. When Emma returns to her home, she is very confuse. ' But her mind had never been in such perturbation' Emma realized that she has made a terrible mistake and she is now need to let Harriet know about Mr Elton and she would have to leave with a difficult situation between her and Mr Elton.

For Emma this episode is very awkward, she realizes that this situation is mainly her fault. She is upset that Mr Elton 's think that he could have a relationship with someone from her social position. She is also an embrace that her interference has created so much confusion. We know that Mr Elton is a very ambitious man that wants to improve his social situation marrying Emma would help. Mr Knightly had warned Emma about Mr Elton 's plan, hopes for the further and the attuiade towards Emma. But Emma ignored this advice so this again shows Mr Knightly is a sensible and clever man. Mr Elton is insulted when he realized Emma through he is interested in Miss Harriet Smith and refused his proposal. '.... no debts, there are man who might not object to - Every body has their level......I need not totally despair of an equal alliance, as to be addressing myself to Miss Smith'
