Theology Samba
In this essay, I will contrast the experiences of God and the self in the country of Paris and Diabolle. I will analyze the lives of Samba, the main character, and Samba's father (the Knight). Samba experiences of himself and God progressively change as he moves from Africa to the more modern in France. I will also discuss the role that the Thierno played in Samba's life and the differences of how they lead their lives. Lastly I will reflect on what I have learned from the contrast that I have described, and I will try to relate it to my own life. In this novel Samba Diallo comes from an aristocratic family, known as Diallobe's. Samba was raised in Africa where he was brought up in a strict environment that was solely based around religion. Samba was chosen to be the natural successor of Theirno the spiritual successor of the society. Samba is sent to a French school in order to both save his country from being overwhelmed by westernization and to learn the secrets of the white man's power in the west. This will be a difficult task for Samba because he was raised around religion and will be forced to try to understand a materialistic civilization in France, where God isn't seen in every part of life.
I experience God in nature and through people that I have came across in life but I don't see God in every aspect of my life. I feel that if I did reflect upon God in ever part of my life I would never be able to accomplish anything besides my relationship with God. I do however lately see myself thinking about my faith differently. A family friend from my home has always said that through tradegy comes a strengthening of faith. I believe in the past few weeks my faith has been streghthen along with the entire US. In the past month since the terrorist attacks on the world trade center, I see an enormous amount of unity among people in not only a public way of worship but also a unity in different religions. In the past months we have seen numerous pray services being held for the victims of this tragedy. We have seen support in prayer from other countries and religious faiths, I feel that this is a perfect example of how we can learn from others. Through this crisis people have displayed that we can set aour specific parts of religion aside, while still keeping with us the basis of ever religion which I believe is love justice and peace. Although the US has endured a tragedy our faith in God keeps us hopeful of a better life and peace among all countries. The Most Royal Lady along with Samba's father decide to send samba to Paris in a quest to bring back ideas of the modern world to his home in Africa. As Samba begins to make the transition to the deistic world he starts to feel the emptiness of the presence of God. " I am the only one who could have this bizarre idea of a life which could be lived, in some fashion, outside the presence of God" (Kane 94). This is a focal point in the book where Samba really begins to question his identity in relationship to his faith. He also begins to comprehend that not everyone finds it attractive to have God present all the time. He realizes that in life there are many things when you cannot do both for instance work and prayer. However the Knight sees it differently and views it as "life is a work of piety". (Kane 100) For the secular world life is life, nothing points to anything but itself, where as for the Knight everything is numinous and has the capacity to point to something beyond self. This all is related to the dilemma that Samba is being contemplated with, can you keep
