Social Studies Report / Their Eyes Were Watching God Exam:
Through my reading of the novel, Their Eyes Were Watching God, I can see many of the under developed, pre-mature stigmas about women that have matured to become highly viewed/considered beliefs of today. Such stigmas include the beliefs that women can't stand on their own, should be seen not taken seriously and that women are the possessions of the man the beside with. Of course, these views are belittling and wrong, but just as much are they popular. They existed then and still do, only now in a modern constructed way.Take the view, women can't stand on their own and require the assistance (protection) of a man to get by, for example. This brings us to our last stigma for discussion- the idea of a woman being a possession. In the novel, the narrator's third husband uses his "alledged" right by marriage to show who's boss and what's his by beating his wife. In the reading it says, he beat her to "justify his jealousy" and to "reassure his possession of her". She had done nothing wrong and wasn't her fault he was jealous, yet he beat her to justify his jealousy and reassure his possession of her. I believe this excerpt sheds a lot of light on the issue of domestic violence- a modern day crime and problem. Men get
