I don't believe that Jim realized how much he taught Antonia. If it was Antonia speaking, she would have told about everything she learned from him and what she thought about him and his family. You would have heard about more of her background and you wouldn't have heard of any kind of dislike of her own family.

Probably one of the biggest events in the story that would have been told differently was the suicide death of Mr. Shimerda. The facts would still be the same, but there would have been more detail leading up to the death. It wouldn't have just happened. Maybe there would have even been some resentment towards the Burdens because they didn't help out enough. They think that he killed himself because he couldn't take things anymore and they were poor and not doing any better. You didn't hear much about the sorrow of the family or the events leading up to the death. It just came about abruptly in the story and Jim didn't even go over there after it happened right away.
