My Antonia

A detailed Summary of My Antonia

Antonia and Jim have some same views but also have opposing views in many senses. In other words they don't see eye to eye in certain subject matters. Jim is very ensued into nature. He is sensitive toward his environment. He even at one point invests human qualities in the landscape around him. "We used to feel anxious about them, and visit them as if they were persons." (Cather, 21) He keeps the landscape to himself as something to dream about, but not to understand. Antonia isn't as infatuated with nature as Jim is. It seems that Antonia has other things to think about than nature. The whole story relates Jim to nature and his environment in some way. If Antonia had written this book there wouldn't be as many references to nature and the environment, it would have been more related to problems and accomplishments in her life.

One big event that happened was when there was an argument between Jim and Antonia. The argument was over how their families acted toward each other and what each other thought of certain members of the family. Jim thinks that Antonia's mother was conceited, and rude

I don't believe that Jim realized how much he taught Antonia. If it was Antonia speaking, she would have told about everything she learned from him and what she thought about him and his family. You would have heard about more of her background and you wouldn't have heard of any kind of dislike of her own family.

Probably one of the biggest events in the story that would have been told differently was the suicide death of Mr. Shimerda. The facts would still be the same, but there would have been more detail leading up to the death. It wouldn't have just happened. Maybe there would have even been some resentment towards the Burdens because they didn't help out enough. They think that he killed himself because he couldn't take things anymore and they were poor and not doing any better. You didn't hear much about the sorrow of the family or the events leading up to the death. It just came about abruptly in the story and Jim didn't even go over there after it happened right away. He was the one to stay home. If Antonia told the story, she would have obviously explained more about her feelings in
