Over the years what's "in" and what's "out" in fashion has changed, and along with it, the stereotypical image of the perfect mate. The gender roles set for men and women have helped each sex define what to look for in a companion. And although everyone has their own taste, we can still observe similarities between each sex about their wants and needs in an ideal partner.
It's a known fact that males and females are both interested in getting their genes into the next generation. And it's no surprise that those more pertinent for survival are more likely to pass on their genes. We know this from Darwins' Natural Selection. However the Parental Investment Theory explains this fact further. The minimum investment for a male is the release of his sperm, but on the other hand the minimum for a woman is 9 months. This factor is part of the reason why females are choosier than males, and also explains in part why females have the tendency to be more interested in personality traits of males. In turn males try to become the possessor of resources for the females in order to gain their attention.

Women seem to choose males that have traits indicating he is more prone to be reliable in helping with the survival of the female and her offspring. Such an example is in sharks. A shark with a keener smell enables him to find more prey, and in turn be healthier, live longer and produce more offspring. The majority of women seek a healthy looking male who is mature, dominant and affluent. Women are always looking for a man who will stick by her and protect her. We noticed this in the movie "Quest for Fire". The male chosen by the female character was the most dominant male, the protector.
