Christmas - Good or Evil?
Christmas; a merry holiday where caring and generosity are to prevail and the love of many overcomes the hate of few. Certainly, the ideals that this celebration embodies are of the highest order. But why has Christmas come under the fire of many religiously inclined people? Is there any truth to the accusations that this holiday could be displeasing to Christ, the very one in whose name it is celebrated? These questions merit the consideration of anyone who claims to be a worshipper of God. If we don't care of what pleases God, we won't care whether our actions could offend him or not, so the answers to these questions would be ineffectual. But for those of us who are genuinely interested in pleasing our creator... we should adamantly peruse the response to these inquiries. Historians agree that December 25 was not the birthday of Jesus. So if December 25 wasn't the day Jesus was born, then when was he born? And where do we get December 25 from? We got Christmas from the Roman Catholics, and they got it from paganism. But where did the pagans get it? And why did the Catholics take this form of paganism on? It originated in ancient Egypt in the days of King Osiris and Queen Isis, about 3'000 B.C. From many
Even the lighting of fires and candles as a Christian ceremony is merely a continuation of the pagan custom, encouraging the waning sun-god as he reached the lowest place in the southern skies! Surely dear old Santa Claus is not a creature of pagan birth? But he is, and his real character is not so benevolent and holy as many suppose! The name 'Santa Claus' is a corruption of the name 'St Nicholas.' A Roman Catholic bishop who lived in the 4th century. St. Nicholas, bishop of Myra, a saint honoured by the Greeks and Latins on the 6th of December; A legend of his surreptitious bestowal of dowries on the three daughters on and impoverished citizen, is said to have originated the old custom of giving presents in secret on the Eve of St. Nicholas (Dec. 6th), subsequently transferred to Christmas day. Hence the association of Christmas with Santa Claus. Many of us will reason this way: "But, even though the exact date of Jesus' birth is unknown, should we not select some date to celebrate his birthday?" The answer is positively no! Sinners alone celebrate their birthdays. The celebration of birthdays is not a Christian, but a pagan custom, therefore celebrating Christ's birthday even worse. The instructions were specific because God wanted his people to observe those particular days. Why, then, the silence as to which day Christ was born? Anyone can see that the Bible nowhere commands to observes birthdays in the first place!! It is an offence towards our creator. The holly, the mistletoe, the Yule log are relics of pre-Christian times - Of paganism! There are very lonely people around this time of year. The joy others experience during the holidays drives home the hopelessness of the situation to someone who is alone in the world. All that Christmas cheer, in other words, pushes those teetering on the edge over the side as they see too clearly what others have and, by contrast, what they do not have. This may lead to suicide. Why have fun at someone else's expense? You might not think you are doing damage, or it isn't your fault, but that is downright selfish. Think about it! Put yourself in their position. Holly berries were also considered sacred to the sun-god. They Yule log is in reality the 'Sun-log'. 'Yule' means 'wheel,' a pagan symbol of the sun. Yet today professing Christians speak of the 'sacred Yuletide season'! There is nothing at all sacred about going against God! Christmas time may seem all merry and happy, but for some families it is a different story. Lots of people are living in poverty in this country, believe it or not. It only takes you to look at some of the back streets, and especially in London the amount of homelessness is unbelievable. Some of these people are runaways. Most of them are drunks and drug addicts with no money or a place to stay. These people have lost all faith in everyone, including God. Christmas does them no favours at all. They see everyone's happiness..and grow to hate all (including themselves) even more.
