Slave Trade
Everyone does something once in their life that they wish they haven't done. When people are young they do dumb things sometimes, and when they look back on it as that person gets older they regret what was done. As a young country, the United States had made mistakes as well. One of the biggest mistakes was the slave trades'. The slave trade was extremely grueling on the Africans, especially in the aspects of the crossing, their lifestyles, and the diseases that were caught along the way. "The United States brought a little less than 500,000 slaves from Africa."(3) Ships brought all the Africans at this time. With this many Africans on one boat it was a pretty tight space, and also the heat didn't really help with this situation. All of this made it extremely hard to breathe, it nearly suffocated them. They practically had to sleep on top of each other. Don't just think that the Americans would let them have a free ride over to America with just tight sleeping quarters. Everyday they had chores to do, like wash and clean the deck daily.(1) This would be torture in the hot sun especially since most of the slave had to travel naked.(1) There were many more duties of their everyday life on the boats. Well at least th
"The first African slaves landed in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619."(4) It didn't just end there. The African slaves were also auction off at Jamestown to any white man to work for them.(2) "Slave owners made fabulous profits of these auctions. They made about 135% alone just from the slaves."(2) by the year 1750 there were more than 200,000 slaves living in the United States colonies.(2) Basically it took them over a hundred years to get a good number of slaves into the United States because of all the harsh treatment. One would think that the slaved would just tale their own lives. "Well, Many of them preferred to die, but even the choice of suicide was taken away from them."(5) "A slave who tried to starve him or herself was tortured. If torture didn't work, the slave was force fed with the help of a contraption called a speculum orum, which helped the mouth stay open."(5) One would more likely to have been shot then have to live with what they went through. When looking back at all of this, one would think how could they put innocent human beings through all of that. Most people today are very ashamed of the way our ancestors treated Africans. One can only learn from their mistakes and they learned it the hard way.
