Probably the single biggest mistake that this country has made, in my opinion, in this century has been to legalize abortion. Most of the problems arose during the movement for "sexual freedom" which tried to remove responsibility and obligation from sex. This (the sixties movements) was hailed as a "breakthrough for humanity" according to an aquaintence. She commented that people discovered that they "didn't have to conform" to society.
The comments that this lady put forth were a sorry attempt at an unbiased plea to think about the issue of abortion when voting this November. She went on to use the neccessary evil arguement when struggling over the legalization of abortion arguement (people would do it anyway). This strikes me as curious and extremely contradictory. On the one hand she lauded the movement that has brought about many of today's social prob
lems, but on the other hand she pleaded we must keep abortion legal because abortions would otherwise be unsafe and harmful. Frankly, I do not accept this and think it is trash.
Aside from the fact that human life begins at conception and continues until death, the issue of conforming to society has no relevance whatsoever on the arguement. There always have and always will be consequences to sex. This is a basic part of nature. In addition, whether you are fairly conservative or a flaming hippy, you will always have consequences to deal with when you select one of the many outcomes that are possible in this universe.
The root of Catholic opposition to abortion and its definition as to when life begins should not be taken as the Church imposing theocracy on society. If the Church were trying to form a theocracy, She would probably be attempting to outlaw birth control, f
