Between 1607 and 1775, slavery was an important part of the southern economy. It eventually became the most common form of labor in the southern colonies. The economic, geographic, and social factors promoted the growth of slavery and enabled slavery to play a major role in the economy of the south.

The economy of the south was growing at a rapid pace. Tobacco became a major export of the southern colonies. As the cultivation of tobacco became increasingly popular in the south, the need for slaves emerged. In England, however, the economy experienced a negative change in their economy. As their economy plunged, the wages rose. The English became penniless and people were unwilling to gamble a n
