Pride and Prejudice

Pride and Prejudice is a story about love and marriage in eighteenth-century England. Its main characters are the elder sisters of the Bennet family, Jane and Elizabeth. In this novel, Jane Austen explores their personalities and misunderstandings. In addition, the role of first impressions, pride, and prejudice plays a large part of Jane and Elizabeth¯s relationships with Mr. Bingley and Mr. Darcy. Because of the status of their family, both Jane and Elizabeth had to deal with extra obstacles in their relationships which affected the outcome of their marriages.

One of the themes of Pride and Prejudice is appearance versus reality. This is showed in the case of Elizabeth¯s view of Mr. Darcy. Because of Elizabeth¯s first impressions of Mr. Darcy, she comes to the wrong conclusions of his identities. Throughout most of the story, Elizabeth was mi


sguided from his true character. However, she later does come to realize that her judgements of Mr. Darcy are totally inaccurate and incorrect.

Elizabeth is blinded of Mr. Darcy¯s true character, which was blocked by his appearance. She was unable to sense his real feeling towards her because she is not allowing him to express them. For example, when Mr. Darcy asked Elizabeth to dance, she insulted him and refused him the dance. Mr. Darcy¯s proposal to Elizabeth is another great example of how she is blinded by appearances. When Mr. Darcy opened up his heart to announce his love for her, Elizabeth only took offense of his offer and turned him down cold. She is not aware of the fact that Mr. Darcy is risking his reputation for her, since they are not in the same social class group. Elizabeth also doesn¯t know about the pressure that Lady Catherine de Bourgh and Miss Bingley is putting on Mr. Darcy. Elizabeth saw the pro
