About one in 25 Americans lived in such a tract, or also known as an "extreme poverty area." Workers living in poverty areas earned on an average of only 15,521 dollars compared to the 23, 122 dollars that is earned by those who live outside of the poverty area. Unemployment in poverty areas was more than twice as high as in the nonpoverty areas, as in those in poverty areas were also more likely not to have worked at all. Another area of poverty would be where families with only a single parent were nearly twice as likely to live in poverty as those families that were maintained by a married couple.
