Denial of Rights in 1984
The novel 1984 touches on many disturbing aspects about the denial of a person's natural rights. As citizens of the United States, we are granted certain rights, which neither the govern-ment nor anyone else can take away. Most nations and governments all over the free world share many of these same rights, which are the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. In Orwell's novel, the Outer Party, which is the government that the people of Oceania live under, has taken away all their rights, especially their natural rights. The right to life has been taken away because a person's life must be dedicated to the Party. A person is created and born for the Party, works for the Party, and dies for the Party. An individual's liberty is taken away as the Party denies the privacy of thought or action. The right of a person pursuing happiness is taken away when all forms of pleasure such as games, sex, and laughter are forbidden. The Outer Party promotes hate and unhappiness among its people, so it may achieve its ongoing drive to maintain POWER. The Party deprives its citizens of a full happy life. A person does not choose what they do for a living. A person does not choose whom they associate with. The only way
The Party promotes hate and unhappiness amongst its citizens. They even celebrate it. Hate week is a special week set aside for the promotion of hate toward everything that the Party condemns. People are also forced to take part in the two-minute hate against Goldstein, the fic-tional leader of the Brotherhood, which is a imaginary group of citizens whom of which secretly betray the Party. . The abomination of sex for pleasure and falling in love with someone are both examples of the denial of pursuit of happiness. The Party tries to keep people as pure as they can. They make sex out to be dirty and a disgusting act to its citizens. The Party even runs a Jun-ior Anti-Sex League to teach children the sin in sex, and to keep them from desiring it. Sex is only supposed to be for the use of reproduction. Winston and Julia, his love interest greatest crime was falling in love. It is sad and disturbing that the Party can deny people from expressing their true feelings toward one another. Today true love is what most everyone strives to attain. The only thing that the Party allows people to love is the Party itself, and Big Brother. The only other emotion the Party promotes is the fear, which drives the Party's control. I hope we will always preserve our right to be able to turn off out T.V, radio, and PC whenever we choose. As for Orwell, I believe his grim vision of his future was only a warning of what we must continually fight to deny and prevent. If Big Brother is watching, as some peo-ple may believe, I know that I certainly do not feel the paranoia and fear that Winston Smith and the citizens of Oceania experienced. The Party takes away all the liberties of its citizens. Liberty can be defined as exemption from control of another, freedom from external restraint, and the power of choice.
