Observation
I cannot remember how I became interested in observing Alice while staying with her family. Maybe, when I see her, standing in front of the mirror, looking at herself with appreciation of her beauty, it got me interested in sailing along with her in her world and see what she sees. Today is a beautiful Easter Sunday. The weather, down here in Eatonton, Georgia at this time of year is pleasant and fresh. Alice Walker, six years old, dressed up in a "green flocked, scalloped-hem, and T-strap patent leather shoes"(41) is ready to go to church. Looking at Alice, I see that she is standing in front of the only mirror in her parents' room, looking at her new dress made by her sister, Ruth. Alice is a beautiful, mischievous, and happy girl. She is adorable. Today she is exited for her new long Easter speech that she is supposed to make in church. I hear Alice is reciting the speech that she has learned for today, "Easter lilies / pure and white / blossom in / the morning light" (41). Summer 1952, Alice is eight years old. I see her playing in the back yard with her brothers, Tom who is ten, and Mike who is twelve years old. Alice is dressed in her red cowboy hat, boots, checkered shirt, and pants. She pretends to be
1958, Alice is fourteen years old. Today is a big day for her. She is supposed to get eye surgery. After her surgery, Alice is happy; I cannot believe that she very quickly becomes the same person she was before the injury. I see her most of time going out with her friends. She is happy and confident again. I see that she is not scared any more to go out and be stared at by people. All of a sudden, I see that Alice bends over, covering her eye with her hand. She has been shot in eye by one of her brothers "BB" gun. She cannot stand the pain and her eye stings. Mike and Tom run to Alice they are panicked and scared. They are trying to make her calm. In the mean time they ask her not to tell anyone what happened. They are scared if they get punished for they have done, and they keep repeating to Alice "we will get whipping you don't want that to happen"(42). Alice tries to open her eye but she cannot, the pain is enormous. She runs in the house to her mother and cries, "Mom, help me! I fell and a wire got in to my eye". Alice is taken to bed. She has a fever and she cannot see through her right eye. Everybody comes to her bed trying to comfort her, but Alice is not well. She does not respond to anyone. All she feels is the pain. After few days later, Mr. and Mrs. Walker decide to take Alice to the hospital but it is too late. There is white scar tissue in her eye and it is not going away. She is alone sitting in the corner; she does not like to go out and se
