Observation
I cannot remember how I became interested in observing Alice while staying with her family. Maybe, when I see her, standing in front of the mirror, looking at herself with appreciation of her beauty, it got me interested in sailing along with her in her world and see what she sees. Today is a beautiful Easter Sunday. The weather, down here in Eatonton, Georgia at this time of year is pleasant and fresh. Alice Walker, six years old, dressed up in a “green flocked, scalloped-hem, and T-strap patent leather shoes”(41) is ready to go to church. Looking at Alice, I see that she is standing in front of the only mirror in her parents’ room, looking at her new dress made by her sister, Ruth. Alice is a beautiful, mischievous, and happy girl. She is adorable. Today she is exited for her new long Easter speech that she is supposed to make in church. I hear Alice is reciting the speech that she has learned for today, “Easter lilies / pure and white / blossom in / the morning light” (41). Summer 1952, Alice is eight years old.
