About Statistics
An important project that was in its early stages at GR&AP dealt with commercial sex workers. The department undertook to write a comparative paper on laws related to commercial sex work around the world. I was originally asked to do the research for Canada, and later on was assigned New Zealand, Thailand, Nepal, and India. The research on these countries' laws was very interesting, and allowed me to gain a better understanding of how other countries' laws operate. I wrote reports for each country and passed them on to my immediate supervisor, who assembled and edited all the reports for review by the co ordinator of the project. The comparative paper was the first step in a lengthy research initiative that the gender department is hoping will result in changing the relevant legislation in Namibia.Another project I was able to work on was the launch of the Domestic Violence Advocacy Campaign. This project had been in the making for some time, and I felt very fortunate to be able to participate in its launch. The campaign was a multi media project with several different components. There was a mural campaign in which school aged children from around the country designed and painted large scale murals having to do with ways of pre
Given the nature of my projects, they were successful in their completion. I was unable to receive any feedback prior to leaving Namibia, but I expect that the research I completed will be used to further develop long term projects in those subject areas aimed at educating the public and changing the laws as they exist in Namibia now. While Namibia is a progressive country, there is still much work to be done in revising old laws and creating new ones that reflect the problems in society. The "Uprooted People's Project" provided an important and essential service to the African diasporic community in South Africa. As the only organization providing legal and social assistance to this community it served as a busy and focal point for the community. We often acted as a referral service or first point of contact for asylum seekers who are unable to access government services or afford legal counsel. We also acted as the only monitor of the Department of Home Affairs and Lindela Deportation Center and hence were called upon often by other non governmental and governmental organizations to provide information and statistics on the plight of asylum seekers in South Africa. My experience at the LAC and in Namibia generally was an overwhelmingly positive experience. The LAC is a very good placement and, despite any small problems that arose during my time there, I would highly recommend it as a continuing placement. Namibia is a beautiful country that is blessed with stability and a friendly population. I am grateful for the opportunity given to me to work in such warm environments.
