Abortions
In this paper I want to talk about the safety of women undergoing abortions. Others reacted negatively to what they considered indecent advertising. The greatest pressure for legal change came from the American Medical Association (AMA), founded in 1847. Horatio Robinson Storer, a Boston physician, led it. "Surveys conducted under the auspices of the AMA and the federal government confirmed the persistence of widespread abortion in the United States through the 1930s." In January 1973 Roe v. Wade, The Supreme Court ruled that abortion is a constitutional right. It ruled that women, as part of their constitutional right to privacy, could choose to terminate a pregnancy prior to the point at which the fetus reached a stage of development that would allow it to survive outside the womb. After that abortion became a divisive and intensely emotional public issue. (A history of abortion, 448). "There are studies, which indicate that the Court is a significant factor in shaping and changing deeply held beliefs. The Supreme Court consistently upheld the legality of abortion in a series of cases in the early and mid-1980s, and the trend has continued in the last several years." (Ranjita, 85). Pro-choice camp defends a woman's right
poverty, to choose abortion, New Jersey Right Life, New Jersey Citizens for Life and the New Jersey State Catholic Conference promptly announced their opposition to the cap. The New Jersey Civil Liberties Union and the NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund also announced their opposition. "The New Jersey welfare changes tested both movements' integrity by challenging both sides' slogans, which increasingly seemed irrelevant to the real world of poor women in New Jersey. The two sides in the controversy understood that and effective protest against the family cap, which violated the core principles of both movements, required a hitherto unthinkable collaboration. (Kelly, 8). The New Jersey NOW-L.D.E.F. and ACLU argued that the cap violated women's reproductive freedom, which they claimed "includes the choice to carry a pregnancy to term. Second, they believed that the cap violated equal protection by creating tow classes of children, some of who receive welfare benefits and some of whom do not, solely based on the timing of their birth. Supreme Court ruled that states could not to fund abortions for poor women, thus already deciding that a constitutionally protected reproductive choice does not financially obligate the state. (Kelly. 8). For years the pro-choice community has been "reactive" to the antichoice community on issues ranging from clinic safety to late abortions. (Pro-choice generation gap, 2).
