Should I Breast-Feed or Bottle-Feed My Newborn?

Should I Breast-Feed or Bottle-Feed My Newborn?

Will you be breast-feeding or bottle-feeding your baby? This is a question every pregnant woman is asked, whether it is before they have the baby, or after they deliver. Not all mothers-to-be read up on this information, which is a disadvantage towards themselves and the infant. This is a very important time in a woman's life, as well as the baby's life, so making the right decision is imperative. Every woman should compare the advantages and disadvantages of both breast-feeding and bottle-feeding, before giving birth to their child. Yes, there are advantages of bottle-feeding, but they just don't compare to the advantages of breast-feeding. Healthy women should breast-feed their babies, rather than bottle-feed.

Bottle-feeding does have a few advantages. It is more convenient than breast-feeding. Either parent or caregiver can feed the baby at anytime. Bottle-feeding gives the mother more flexibility to go make errands or go to work with out disrupting the feeding schedule. Woman can also get back to work shortly after birth if they choose to bottle-feed. Finally, women who bottle-feed also do not have to buy bras and other clothes that enable them to nurse a child

Breast-feeding is beneficial for both the mothers and the babies. "When suckling starts within the first hour it helps the uterus to contract, which reduces bleeding after delivery. The risk of ovarian and breast cancer is lower among those who have breastfed." (Abebe, par. 2) It may be easier to loose weight through nursing, by getting rid of extra calories. Mothers who breast-feed also do not have to stumble to the refrigerator for a bottle and warm it while the baby is crying. Breast-feeding is a source of warmth and comfort, and an easy way to develop a close and loving relationship with their child.

Many woman see the advantages of bottle-feeding, but often overlook the disadvantages. First, without breast-feeding, the child will not receive the antibodies produced in breast milk that protect against infections. Secondly, formula can be expensive. Mothers must also take extra care in mixing the formula to make sure that the baby gets the right amount of nutrients. It also takes longer time to prepare formula before feeding. Bottle-feeding can produce gas and constipation as well. "Manufactured formula have not yet to duplicate the complexity of breast milk, which changes as the baby's needs change." ("Bottle-feeding")

The baby receives a numerous amount
