Sun Also Rises

First there is Jake Barnes. Then we have Robert Cohn. Next up is the charming Michael Campbell. Finally the young Pedro Romero enters the story. These four men have one thing in common; they all fall in love with the beautiful Lady Brett Ashley. Unfortunately for them, Brett grows unsatisfied with each of them and moves from one to the other. She causes each of them to fall hopelessly in love with her and then breaks their hearts. This is why she is the one responsible for their actions.

Jake handles the end of his relationship with Brett fairly well. The other three, however, do not deal with things as well. Cohn's love for Brett is evident from the time he and Brett return from their stay in San Sebastian. From this point on Cohn begins to act a little strange. He follows Brett wherever she goes and stares at her constantly while they are in Pamplona. Not only do the other men make comments about how Cohn is driving them crazy, but so too does Brett: "My God! I'm so sick of him" (185)! Cohn falls victim to Brett's char

The men do not know that she is trouble and that is why she is the one at fault for the situations she gets into.

Brett begins to pull apart from the group and spend more time with Romero. After she and Romero escape to Madrid together, Jake receives two telegrams with the same message: "COULD YOU COME HOTEL MONTANA MADRID AM RATHER IN TROUBLE BRETT" (242, 243). After Jake arrives she tells him what the trouble is: "He wanted to marry me, finally...He really wanted to marry me. So I couldn't go away from him, he said. He wanted to make it sure I could never go away from him" (246). Brett breaks up with him. She supplies Jake with reasons why: saying that she is thirty-four and does not want to ruin him. What hap
