Aleksandr Pushkin
Pushkin was a revolutionary and his liberal vies are depicted in almost all of his poems. The five poems that will be discussed in this research paper clearly present Pushkin's views. "The prisoner", "Just There over the Crowned...", "The league of ours is...", "It's time my friend...", and "Oh Rome- a proud land..." These particular five poems by Aleksandr Pushkin, helped me in creating a more clear and perceptive image of the poet, his life, and his ideals. In the first poem "the prisoner" Pushkin is describing his experience in prison. Pushkin was arrested by Czar Nicholas I, for his liberal views. This poem, can be interpreted as Pushkin's experience in prison. However an alternative interpretation of this poem, is that lives of the Russian people were being oppressed and their liberties were confined by their king. "We're free proud birds; it is time for the friends to fly." he is inciting his people to get out of this "prison" "Let us fly outside!" This poem clearly shows Pushkin's liberal and somewhat revolutionary views. His view of the current Russian government--monarchy-- is that of a prison that is denying its citizens the right to be free. In the next poem "Just there, over the crowned..." pus
Undoubtedly, this theme is also present in the next poem, which is titled "It's time my friend..." just by it's title one can instantly infer that the poem contains a revolutionary theme. In fact one need not read the poem but only look at it's author, Pushkin, and immediately make and educated assumption that the poem will contain some of the author's liberal views. "it's time my friends, it's time!...the world hasn't happiness...and long have I daydreamed the life of bliss-- and long have planned, a tired slave, the flight to the removed abode of labor and delight." Again events of the time suggest that Pushkin, just like the majority of the Russian people of the time, has had enough of the tyranny of the monarchy, and feels that it is time for them to revolt against it. He feels that it is time for the Russian people to make that dream of living a life of bliss, without labor but pure delight, a reality. In the poem titled "The league of ours is..." Pushkin, is describing the underground organization, which he was part of, and for which he was exiled and later arrested. This organization sort of resembles the Bolshevik one which would come to being 80 years after Pushkin's death and would be responsible for overthrowing the monarchy and forever ending serfdom in Russia. In this poem, Pushkin is depicting the common perception that the monarchy has for his organization. They are regarded as outlaws by the world, which at Pushkin's time was mostly governed by monarchial governments, but on the other hand the people that were being ruled by the mon
