The Effect of Physical Appearance on Society
"Rehman, Rehman, Rehman, haven't you read your handbook this year?" asked Mrs. Benson. "Yes I have Mrs. Benson, is there a problem?" I replied. "The Handbook clearly states 'Boys are to be clean-shaven (without beards, mustaches, or side-burns below the ear)" she said. She then passed me a razor and a bottle of shaving cream and sent me straight to the washroom. What does physical appearance have to do with attending school? Bayview Glen is not the only institution that has rules on physical appearance. Around the World society has different rules on the physical appearance that is acceptable for the people within them. Institutions (schools and workplaces) have even stricter physical appearance rules. If there were no rules people would most likely wake up in the morning and go straight to work without changing out of their pyjamas. Lazy people would probably not even wash their clothes. As time has progressed society has become more open to the physical appearance is accepted. The events of September 11th has also affected the way people look at other people with different a physical appearance. Physical appearance can be anything from facial features to different types of piercing to type of clothing.
Do all workplaces have the same rules for their employee's physical appearance? Every workplace has different rules on what physical appearance is acceptable for their employees. Some workplaces there are no rules and others there are specific rules that you must abide by. I worked at Baby Gap and Wonderland and their rules were completely different. At Baby Gap the only rule was that you had to wear Gap clothing. You could have your tongue pierced and even have facial hair and it was not a problem. I think they allowed it because they are trying to cater to the younger generation where having facial hair and having body piercing is accepted. At Wonderland the rules were different. Men could not have facial hair unless it was religious, they were not allowed to have any visible body piercing and were not allowed to wear anything on their head. For females, they could only have two earrings per ear and we not allowed wearing an excess of make up. I think the rules in the workplace depend on what type of people the company is trying to cater to. up a copy of Forbes, Fortune or Time magazine, what do you normally see on the cover? In most instances, the covers of these business magazines depict a leader (CEO, President) dressed in business attire not in causal clothing. They are usually well groomed and inspire confidence. On a whole society has confidence in a leader who looks like he or she knows how to look after themselves.
